I just moved across the Country last month

and I don't currently have quick access to all my photographs from 2011,

I'm going to share a couple of old photos, and some new,

never seen before, photographs from the last two months of 2011.

The first one is most precious to me....

Taken in Spring of 09

I surely miss this aerodynamic tail wagging.

You have to look closely to see it. It's moving so fast it's all but invisible.

We used to jokingly call this rapid fire whip, a deadly weapon.

Though if in his exuberance, it slapped you on your bare leg, you knew it was no joke.

I'm pretty sure someone he loved very much was coming up the walk...

the whip was whipping and the pittie butt was wiggling.

Santa Monica Mountain Trails {Malibu Canyons}

I've just come from visiting my youngest daughter and her family in Malibu.

They have a sweet place up on a Ranch in the Canyons of the Santa Monica Mountains.

The trails are exquisite up there, providing the much coveted afternoon sunlight, which is essential for

some wonderful sun flare and back lighting.

I hope you enjoy my photographs taken on my daily walks through the trails near her home.

A Season Of Joy

As we plunge into another holiday season, complete with obnoxious commercial distractions and endless debate about the appropriateness of religious symbolism, let’s not forget one simple truth: when we help others, we create happiness for ourselves and those we help. Whether it’s by serving a meal to hungry people, giving a new coat to one in need, or any other act of human kindness, Christmas is a wonderful time to demonstrate the love of Christ. As we do, we “rejoice” in the sense that we create joy, both for the giver and the recipient.

Helen Keller said, “Believe, when you are most unhappy, that there is something for you to do in the world. So long as you can sweeten another's pain, life is not in vain.”
Working to alleviate the suffering of others not only serves their needs, but it takes your focus off of yourself. It’s hard to complain about your problems when you’re personally involved with someone else’s problems. This shift in perspective should foster a sense of happiness.

The beauty of this path to happiness lies in its simplicity. All of us can help someone in some way. It just requires stepping outside of ourselves as we give time and effort to improve someone else’s life. No measure of service or sacrifice is too small.
It should be noted that helping others involves sympathy (compassion for someone) or empathy (sharing in their pain), but not a complete assumption of their burden. Psalm 55:22 says, "Cast your burden upon the Lord and He will sustain you..." (NAS) Jesus said, "Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest." (Matthew 11:28, NAS)

Helping others means meeting some of their needs while pointing them to Jesus. We are clearly told to allow Jesus Christ to take our burdens. Taking others’ burdens can do more harm than good if we are not careful. We shouldn’t compound our own suffering with the suffering of others, but join with them in casting all of our cares upon Him. God can handle it; we cannot. Presuming that we can may invite additional and unnecessary hardship. It is only through obedience and an overflowing empowerment of the Holy Spirit that we can share in and alleviate the suffering of others without being overwhelmed by it.

One simple, but easily overlooked, way to help someone is through prayer. When people run out of practical options, they sometimes say, “All you can do is pray.” It’s treated as a last-ditch effort when our human ability fails. Even Christians fall into this trap because prayer deals with the unseen. It wars against “principalities and powers.” It focuses on changing people’s hearts and minds. But the natural human inclination is to measure effectiveness by immediate, visible results. So we consciously or unconsciously consider prayer an option only when we’re out of options. Still, it’s one of the most powerful forces in the world.

Praying for others always changes someone, but it’s not always the “someone” we expect. Whether the person for whom we pray responds as we wish is out of our control, but that doesn’t mean we should not pray. At the very least, our act of bringing another person’s concerns or condition before God changes us. As we take another’s burden to the Lord, He touches us as He takes that burden upon Himself. That touch is worth the experience of intercession. It’s an open invitation for God to bless us as we share His concern for someone He loves even more than we do.

Make this month a true season of joy – God’s joy. Pray for others and help them when you can. Then you will live out the truth that helping others is as much about finding God’s happiness for yourself as it is about impacting the life of someone else.

For me, there is no better way to end the day than watching the sun go down.

To see the evening sky change to the deep, golden blue...

the pinks, purples, and red or yellow or orange glow,

is one of the most fascinating of natural phenomena...

No two sunsets are ever the same.

On this Thanksgiving weekend, there was not a cloud in the sky.

In San Diego, the weather had been a glorious 84 degrees during the day...

It is Winter, however and once the sun set, the night air did turn chilly.

I've included some of my most recent sunset photographs.

These were made on 26 November at Sunset Beach, California.

The new moon was the bareset sliver of light. Once it rose high into the night sky,
the shadow of the full moon was completely visible,
and cast a gorgeous, otherworldly reflection across the ocean waves.

I pray that you will enjoy the wonderful Devotion, written by Randy Robison,
dedicated to the real reason for this Christmas Season.

A Long Time Coming ....

It's been a long time coming....

Since my last post I have finally arrived in San Diego.

Call me crazy, but some things just had to be done...

I've been here just two weeks, as of yesterday.

Can you believe that Thanksgiving has come and GONE!

In just one single month we will be looking into the face of 2012.

Unbelievable!

2011 has been an extremely difficult year for me and I won't be sad to see it go...

No more Way Too Long periods of time not seeing my daughters and my three handsome grandsons.

Though I've never lived in San Diego; California is home to me and I am finally home.

I've been shooting since I arrived and have posted a few photos on my fb page,

but I haven't posted here in a very long time.
I'm still planning to start a new 365 very soon.

San Diego is home to Balboa Park, which is an amazing smorgasboard of photographic opportunities.

you'll know of my affinity for Old, Gnarly, Deadwood.

There will be many, many more of this type in the future.

Though this tree appears to be lying dead on the ground,

notice the new growth all along the trunk.

It's some type of Juniper ....

Can you look at this photo below and tell me there is no Creator?

This is the trunk of a dead palm tree.

It's been shaved smoothly in half.

The pattern and design inside is the actual trunk, carved by the hands of God.

This photo does not do it justice.

It's Amazing!

Last month I attended the White Coat Ceremony of my beautiful neice, Taylor.

She is beautiful and she has the sweetest personality.

I know that will absolutely translate over into a wonderful 'bedside manner' as a doctor.

Whatever specialty she goes into.
I think she's leaning towards Trauma.

Celebrate America's Independence

Celebrate America the Beautiful!

235 years ago, our Founders adopted the Declaration of Independence. Today, we are citizens of the oldest, freest and most prosperous republic in the world. This Independence Day, let us celebrate the 56 men who had the courage to declare to the world "that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." Let us also remember those who have ensured these words live on today. The members of our Armed Forces who have fought battles around the world to ensure that no foreign enemy could threaten our 'unalienable rights' deserve our unending gratitude. As do countless Americans in every generation of our nation's history that have stood vigilantly in their everyday lives against any attacks on and infringements of the rights laid out for every American in the Declaration of Independence.

Ronald Reagan once called the Declaration of Independence "a document destined to be as immortal as any work of man can be." And he was right. This document, crafted and signed in a time of great turmoil, has been a guidepost not just to our country and people, but to people around the world. The principle of a nation whose government is empowered by the consent of the governed has inspired democracies in every corner of the globe.

As we join our family and friends in the comfort of barbeques and fireworks, we do so knowing that many are also burdened by worry and uncertainty. There is no question that our nation is facing tremendous challenges. We have a sluggish economy, high gas prices and unsustainable levels of debt and deficits. Yet, I have great confidence in the resilience of America and that of the American people. This is not the first time our nation has faced challenges, and this is not the first time we will rise up to meet them.

Because of the unique conviction, commitment and optimism of the American people, we have always come out of the tough times stronger than ever, and I know we will do it again this time. One reason for our resiliency is our faith in individual liberty. For over two centuries, in good times and bad, the democratic principles that have guided our nation have not been compromised. The ability of Americans to rise up and make their voices heard has continued to show the world the benefits of living in a free democratic republic. And our nation will continue to be a symbol of hope to men and women around the world for many generations to come.

I am proud to be an American, and am proud that we remain a nation that inspires, but we must also remember that our freedoms are not free. We owe our continued way of life to the many courageous men and women, from the Revolutionary War to the wars of today, who have and continue to serve and sacrifice to protect our liberty. On this July Fourth, I hope we all take the time to reflect on the modern-day patriots that are serving, on their families and on the fundamental rights that make us quintessentially American.

Baby Dog, Baby Love ♥

The Days of Sorrow and Sadness...

These are the chronicles of my last days with my precious babydog.

He was very sick over the weekend. He stopped eating on Friday,

and started throwing up late in the night.

Friday night he wouldn't stay on the bed with me, so I slept on the floor with him.

Friday night and all day Saturday and all through the night we slept under his favorite window.

He was so strong, right to the end. He somehow still had the strength to go outside.

He absolutely would not go potty in the house. Or even on the deck. I told him he didn't have to go down the ramp, but he did go down the ramp. Every time.

Then I'd pick him up and bring him up the steps. He wouldn't let me carry him down...

Sunday night we slept on his bed in the dining room. I knew he was leaving me.

I, in my human selfishness "needed" some last pictures...

These were all taken on Friday 28 May.

Then I put the camera away and we began our 11th hour vigil.

I don't really know how to express my feelings of those last three days.

The pictures will be my words.

{I did at least show him enough respect to not let him see the camera.}

On Memorial Day Zeke went to be Jesus' dog.
He died in my arms while I stroked his belly and his feet,
breathing in his sweet puppy scent one last time.
My tears wetting his Beautiful Brindle fur while Nuzzling his neck,
I whispered my love for him in his ear as he quietly left this world..

He is Forever Loved, I am Forever Missing Him.

This past month has been the Longest, Lonliest month of my life.

Sugar Pie Baby Dog {Zeke} Part II

"All Dogs Go To Heaven"

I'm sure all of you who know me, know by now that my precious boy
Zeke, went to be with Jesus in heaven on Memorial Day.

Over those last days his kidney's failed and he went down rapidly over the week end.

I was unable to get Veterinary care for him over the week end.
We spent two agonizing days in sickness.
Since he was so sick and wouldn't stay on the bed with me, I slept on the floor by his bed with him.

By Monday morning when I found a Vet that would see him as a new patient,

he was in complete renal failure.

My Thanks go out to the wonderful Dr. and staff at Hewitt Veterinary,
for their willingness to take us in, and the kindness and care they gave us ..

Zeke went peacefully and quietly as I held him in my arms and whispered Love in his ear.
No more sickness and suffering. I'm sad for my loss.
I rejoice that he is not suffering in pain or sickness.

He was my baby dog. My kid with paws. My boy child.

Only those who love their furry kids can know and understand this most precious and special bond.
I always joked that Zeke thought I gave birth to him.

In 07 he had ACL Surgery. {that will be more pictures...}
After that he became much less enamored with posing for pictures.
Though his ligament surgery healed fine with no complications,
It began to seem like pictures became much more of a chore for him than before the surgery.
After the surgery, he also became extremely anxious when separated from me.
Later in reading and researching results of this surgery,
I learned that many dogs who go through any type of surgery or major illness in which they spend extended amounts of time in the hospital, are more likely to experience separation anxiety.

..even though he has devil dog eyes in this picture, I love the prick of his ears.
He has the sweetest ears....♥

Part I

~~♦The Early Years♦~~

This is a sad,sad story of heartbreak for me.

I've come here and tried to write it several times over the past 13 days.

Every time I try, I just can't bring myself to it.

So I'm going to begin with the happy parts...

On the 18th day of July in 1997, my daughter Breeze called me to come to her house for a surprise.

When I first arrived, she wasn't there... I waited....She came in after only a few minutes.

In her arms, she had two little, tiny, tiny Staffie puppies.

One was Brindle with a white chest and a pink heart shaped spot on his nose.

With four little tiny white paws.

The other was Fawn and White. Very Blond.
Breeze's pup, Bruno turned 14 on June 09, 011!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

This is the Story of the Sweet Baby Brindle Pup.

He was soooo cute and soooo tiny.

I named him Ezekiel. He quickly became Zeke. "Neek" to my then, two year old grandson, Ian.

We all often called him Neek over the years, even as Ian grew up and pronounced "Zeke" very well.

Now I had a girl dog at this time. Her name was Mattie. She was ten years old.

I had only recently lost two other much loved baby dogs. Chopper, A Staffy rescue and Davey Boy.

Mattie and Davey Boy were Pit/Lab mix pups born to my girl Sativa, our first Staffie,

who got "assaulted" by a dog on the loose that jumped our fence into the back yard....

That's a whole, different crazy story...

Yes, we wound up keeping two of the pups... Even though I didn't want to....

My young daughters prevailed.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I unfortunately, have not located all of Zeke's baby pictures...

since I moved from California, so much has remained, still packed.

I have boxes and boxes and boxes ..of pictures...

This first picture.."dog butts"...was taken the first day Zeke came home.

Mattie didn't quite know what to make of him.

Zeke at thirteen weeks. The first week he started obedience class.

This was Zeke's first road trip, when I discovered he would have to be forever medicated for travel...

He's Seven months old... Mattie is Eleven years in this picture.

She lived to be two months away from Seventeen! ♥

What a girl she was! Best Escape Artist EVER!!!

Check out her dainty little feet! Hard to imagine these feet capable of scaling a six feet privacy fence.

She certainly could do it a skinny minute though. I guess she got that from her dad ;)

After all, that's how she came to be....

Zeke was a lap dog from the very beginning and he never stopped sitting on my lap.

Even at 75 pounds.

When we came to SC he always wanted to sit on Mama's lap too.

And of course, she let him.... he was toooooo SWEET!

I missed my daughters and my three grandbabies in California, this Mother's Day,

as well as every day that I'm away from them...

However, I did get to shoot portraits of my two great nieces yesterday.

What beautiful girls they are.

In a lot of ways they remind me of my girls when they were small.

Especially the hair ;)

It was a great afternoon session.

We had a little faux tea party and blew some bubbles...

The weather was gorgeous and we got into some FABULOUS light!

Just Pictures..

While the ThreeSixtyFive project I joined in 2010 was challenging as far as meeting the posting deadlines; which I failed miserably.... the challenge of finding an interesting daily subject was quite exhilarating.

Since I was so lousy at the posting part and usually managed to post about once a week,

I decided to try a "52 Weeks" Project.

Can you say boooooring...

I always have way too much material for one photograph a week.

I wound up posting at least 7, sometimes 10+ pictures each week...

I'm pretty sure that's not actual protocol for a 52 Weeks Project.

And I still have the same posting issues.

So on that thought....

I have decided to abandon the project, and just SHOOT!

This week I'm sharing my most recent Dog Sessions.

This is Max, an adorable little English Bulldog.

I had a great time with Max. He's very well trained, which makes my job so easy.

He smelled good too, which is always a plus!

You can see the inclusion of Mom's legs in all of Max's best shots...

he felt more comfortable with her close by and therefore

he was more cooperative with her in the shots.

ahhhhh such a sweet little smush face!

This is Bailey.

Just a pup, only nine months old.

Bailey has not yet attended obedience shool and was quite a challenge.

I don't think he's ever seen a camera before. Not one as big as mine anyway...

He seemed quite freaked out by it, everytime I raised it to shoot.

Oh, but he is sooooo sweet. Such a little love bug.

So tall and gangly; just a big ole puppy dog!

Bailey does not like to be indoors during the day, so he didn't smell quite as nice as Max.

I had a hard time keeping focus during the outdoor session. He kept running away...

I hope to have a chance to re-shoot wth Bailey.

He is a Beautiful Boy!

He's almost 14 years old now... It's rather sad to think about that, sometimes.

He's been with me since he was a tiny little babe, just 7 weeks old.

I love him dearly. We have been through some stuff together.

Through thick and thin...

Zeke used to love sitting and posing for the camera. He'd sit and stay.

I'd make a whining sound and he's cock his big head...snap!

These days he'd much rather ignore the camera.

I think he pretends it's not there.... and he is soooo over the whining thing...

When I have the camera in hand these days, he is always looking away.

Sometimes when I call his name, he'll draw his ears back and give me this uber disdainful look....

this is an uncommisioned shot.

He is on the other side of an invisible fence... hence the happy look. {sarcasm intended...}

I pass him every day on my walk...he used to scout the street from atop a car that sat by the driveway.
That car is gone now, so he now keeps his vigil from the lawn.

He's sure a beauty... I've seen his owner playing with him, and he looks healthy...

Sister Shoot

These two beauties are the daughters of a friend and fellow photog.

We went out and about and landed at Lynches River, on a warm Sunny afternoon in early February.

Lynches is one of my favorite places to shoot.

We landed here on this old tank, after finding a dead bird on the bench down in the gully.

This background should be bursting with the reds and greens of new birth by now.

Lots of pretty and unusual (to me) birds in my yards these days.

Thanks to my friend Frank for identifying this Pine Grosbeak for me. From the link he provided I discovered another site which lead to the identification of several other birds I've recently seen in my yards.

These shots of the Cardinal and the Robin at the Fountain were shot through double paned glass.

Homemade Coconut Macaroons

These tree trunks really are this white, with a slight blue tinge.

I had to over expose the shot to bring them out.

I added a light vignette to add some depth to the white sky.

Here they are slightly darkened.

Any id on this tree? The leaves, trunk and shape mimics a crepe myrtle,

but these berries are not crepe myrtle.

I took a quick trip with two of my sisters to Florida, to visit our Uncle.

It was beautiful there, and the weather was sublime.

Balmy and 73º.

It reminded me a lot of California... Though in the Summer; it's NOTHING like California.

The Florida humidity in the Summer is excruciatingly brutal.

Too bad we came home to more snow and ice...

We had intended to go out shooting again the next day, but decided to leave a day early to try and get home before the Monday morning snowfall turned to dangerous ice on the roads.

There were white Pelicans on the other side of the lake, that I didn't get to shoot. That made me very sad :(

This is my Uncle Alar, Mama's only surviving brother.

Twenty Eleven...

Wow..another year has come and gone. Where on Earth, did it go?

The 21st Century is speeding along. Hopefully with no speeding tickets ;)

No 365 Project for me this year.

The posting is, for me, too constrictive,

and is my least favorite aspect of journaling with my photographs.

I am however, trying a 52 weeks project.

It probably won't be a traditional 'one picture a week' project,

rather as few as one, or as many as four or five or more, per week.

My year started out kind of slow, with snow and ice and a few birds...and a quick trip to Florida,

that didn't yeild anywhere near as many pictures as I'd hoped for.

It was a super QUICK trip.

The days are getting longer and longer,

I'm excited to see what Amazing Thing(s) God will do in this year,

Twenty Eleven.

Baby it's Cold Outside....

Even though I don't like cold weather, [I am from Southern California...]

there is a certain beauty in a lot of Winter elements.

Like these leaves from the huge Sycamore tree that graces my back yard in South Carolina.

The leaves, which are from five to ten inches in size,

cover every square inch of everything back there.

Yet, in the early morning light, when the frost is still on the ground,

the frosted rims of these leaves are extrordinarily beautiful.

Three Shells ... more from "a series of Kitsch"

Since it is soooo cold outside, I'm concentrating my efforts inside..

where it's warm and toasty. I Thank the LORD for heat and shelter!

I have no idea, how many images this shoe series will have...

I have a ton of shoes, though certainly not all are picture worthy...

I briefly thought about this series for the first time back in January

when I posted a picture of my torquoise boots, as the POTD.

The series never materialized, until now.

I've always liked taking pictures of shoes.

I always get a great shot of the brides shoes when I shoot a wedding.

After all, she will most likely never wear them again...

So to begin... A series of Shoes.. some funky, some cool..

some..well... you won't see the sensible shoes here.

Starting off with my old favorites... I do mean OLD. Literally...

We lived in Oklahoma for 10 months back in 1981.

You can't live in Oklahoma and not own at least one pair of cowboy boots.

Real or not...

I like REAL.

So this is my first pair. They are handcrafted T.O. Stanley's.
